Literary regionalism and the crisis of Brazil-Empire
a study on Inocência, by Visconde de Taunay
Abstract
This research aims to analyze and explain, from a sociological perspective, the formal structure of Inocência, a regionalist novel by Visconde de Taunay, published in 1872. It follows Franco Moretti's theoretical work, which addresses the correspondence between literary form and historical reality. It intends to discuss, above all, the political-social issues that underlie this novel, namely: the dissolution of the monarchy and the patriarchal ideology in the 1870s. The aesthetic-social project of the writer is reformist, since the denunciation of local reality of the wilderness configures the literary form of the novel.
